The frequency of so-called "pitbull" attacks, as portrayed by the media, are inaccurate for a number of reasons. The media only pay attention to "pitbull" and Rottweiler attacks, whereas other dog breeds get no press coverage. Plus "pitbulls" are difficult to identify. It could have been any short-haired, medium sized and bulky dog. My objection is simply that these types of reporting aren't factual.  They're filled with rumors, sensationalism, misleading information, hearsay, and hype.

Profit-driven news organizations are under great pressure to boost ratings by sensationalizing the news: focusing attention on lurid, highly emotional stories, often featuring a bizarre cast of characters and a gripping plot but devoid of significance to most people's lives. From Tonya Harding to O.J. Simpson to Elian Gonzalez, major news outlets have become more and more dependent on these kind of tabloid soap operas to keep profits high More...

The following papers were done by the Endangered Dog breeds association of Australia (EDBA):

The following article appeared in the Seattle Times, Wednesday, June 18, 2003. "It's time to put an end to the carnage of pit bulls"

The journalist, Matt Rosenberg, makes a malicious lie in the article. He states" According to the Centers for Disease Control, pit bulls are also among the breeds that bite most often."

The above statement is nowhere to be found on the CDC website (www.cdc.gov). In a conversation with the CDC, they told me that the above statement is not true. The following is from a lawsuit against the Seattle Times for false and defamatory statement:

Mark v. Seattle Times, 96 Wn. 2d at 482.

There also stated in section 558 Restatement (2d) of Torts (1977) as:

(a) A False and defamatory statement concerning another;

(b) An unprivileged publication to a third party;

(c) Fault amounting to at least negligence on the part of the publisher;

and,

(d) Either actionability of the statement, irrespective of special harm or

the existence of special harm caused by the publication.

Simms vs. KIRO Inc. @0 wn.App. 229, 233, 580 P.2d 642 (1978).
